About Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center

A 312-bed acute care hospital, Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center serves the greater Harrisburg region with outpatient and inpatient diagnostic, medical and surgical services on its East Pennsboro Township, Pa., campus and outpatient locations in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York counties. The four-story Ortenzio Heart Center at Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center is devoted to the care and treatment of patients with heart problems. Its level II trauma center physicians and staff provide around-the-clock complex critical care for those suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Founded in 1963 by the Sisters of Christian Charity, Holy Spirit Medical Center has earned national accreditations for its centers of excellence in the treatment of cardiac care, atrial fibrillation, heart attack (STEMI), heart failure, stroke, diabetes, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and bariatric surgery. Holy Spirit Medical Center joined Penn State Health in 2020.

Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center is a community Catholic hospital sponsored by the Sisters of Christian Charity to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all in need. Trauma Care

Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center is a Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation accredited Level II Trauma Center. Trauma centers provide around-the-clock complex critical care for patients suffering from life-threatening injuries such as those resulting from motor vehicle accidents, falls and acts of violence. Holy Spirit Medical Center’s trauma team includes a trauma/critical care physician, an emergency medicine physician, neurosurgeons and orthopaedic traumatologists who are supported by surgical and non-surgical specialists and staff from anesthesia, radiology and interventional radiology.

Quality Awards

The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) has recognized Holy Spirit Medical Center for its efforts to ensure patient safety.

Holy Spirit Medical Center is among 17 hospitals statewide to receive HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition this year. Now in its third year, the program honors Pennsylvania’s top-performing hospitals that have demonstrated low rates of healthcare-associated infections.

Over the years, Holy Spirit Medical Center has earned American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) honors for our commitment to providing evidence-based heart and stroke care. Holy Spirit Medical Center was the first hospital in Pennsylvania to receive the GWTG Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Gold award, recognizing us for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. We also earned the GWTG Heart Failure Gold Plus award, and the GWTG Stroke Gold Plus award.

We are certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and we earned Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care from The Joint Commission. We are accredited as a Chest Pain Center (primary PCI with resuscitation) by the American College of Cardiology.

Holy Spirit Medical Center earned Highmark Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center designations for cardiac care and spine surgery, as well as Blue Distinction Center+ designation for knee and hip replacement. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community.
