Stereotactic Image-Guided Breast Biopsy

Image-Guided Core Needle Breast Tissue Sample

If a mammogram or ultrasound finds an abnormal lump or tumor in your breast, our radiologist may recommend a stereotactic image-guided breast biopsy to exam the breast tissue for cancer cells. This minimally invasive test uses a hollow needle to pass through the breast to the site of the lump. In order to pinpoint the lump, the radiologist will use ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide the hollow needle to the exact location. This test is performed either lying on your stomach using a special table to stabilize your breast, or seated.

Before performing the biopsy, your breast will be numbed and cleaned. The doctor will collect several samples during the procedure and leave behind a small clip so the spot can be easily located if the lump proves to be cancerous. The small clip also marks the area to ensure there are no changes in the tissue at your next mammogram.

This procedure may be performed if:

• A mammogram shows an abnormal mass that cannot be felt on breast examination or an abnormal cluster of small calcium deposits.

• Same-day results for screening exams – you may wait to see if your screening exam shows any abnormalities and schedule additional tests if necessary.
• Automated whole breast ultrasound (ABUS) – a screening breast ultrasound used for women with dense breast tissue and at high risk for breast cancer.
• Breast MRI – used to identify and stage breast cancer and other breast diseases. This is also a valuable screening tool for women at high risk for breast cancer.
• On-site radiologists for consultation – our radiologists are available to discuss any abnormal results.

Advanced Surgical Care

If surgery is necessary to remove a benign or cancerous tumor, our goal is to conserve breast tissue. Our breast surgeons are skilled in the latest minimally invasive techniques, including:

• Wireless localization using SAVI SCOUT technology – a surgical guidance system that uses no radiation or wires. It precisely targets the tumor for a lumpectomy or biopsy.
